One of the most successful videogames of the last decade is getting a live-action treatment by Warner Bros, and they're bringing in a pretty big name to play the lead role. Reports indicate that Jason Momoa is negotiating for the lead role in the upcoming live-action Minecraft.

Momoa is no stranger to those in charge as Dune producer Mary Parent is producing the project along with Roy Lee. Additionally, Napoleon Dynamite filmmaker Jared Hess has been brought in to direct the project. Executive producers include Jon Berg, Cale Boyter and Jon Spaihts, while Jill Messick will also get a posthumous producing credit for developing the idea before she passed away in 2018.

Mojang Studios will be involved in the project as well as Lydia Winters and Vu Bui from Mojang will also be producing the project.

It's a project with plenty of bumps in the road and various names attached to it. The project started in 2014 and at one point had Steve Carell set to play the lead role, but Carell eventually left the project due to scheduling conflicts. In addition, "It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia" star Rob McElhenney was set to be a director and dropped out of the project back in 2018. The film has already announced two release dates that were eventually pushed back; the latest was supposed to be March 4, 2022, but was pushed back to an unknown date on October 5, 2020, because of the pandemic.

Minecraft continues to be a dominant force in the video game world, having passed one trillion views on YouTube, and the game recently set a new record with 141million monthly active users. Following Minecraft's success, Microsoft bought Mojang studios for $2.5billion.
