Embracer Group announced a pretty significant purchase to start the week. Embracer has revealed the acquisition of Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal and Square Enix Montreal. The addition will also include the major IP from those companies like Tomb Raider, Deux Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain.
The purchase comes with a pretty significant price tag, which is listed at $300million, still nowhere close to the recent Activision/Blizzard/Microsoft, and Sony/Bungie moves in the billions.
The move is great news for the A Perfect Dark reboot, which Crystal Dynamics is working on and also should please Tomb Raider fans with Crystal Dynamics working on that. Both projects should get a significant boost. Unfortunately, perfect Dark lost its game director about a month ago, which was a substantial blow.
It's also great news for all Square Enix projects, as they've come under criticism for not giving studios all the tools necessary to let projects reach their full potential. Games that have come under criticism include the recent Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy games, which were also financial disappointments. As a result, it's expected that Square Enix will move their focus to technologies, blockchain and cloud gaming.
Embracer is building itself quite the portfolio as it also holds Deep Silver, Saber Interactive and THQ Nordic. The deal is expected to be official sometime between July and September.
